Strategic Growth Plan

Harborough District Council has voted by a narrow margin to endorse the Strategic Growth Plan. This would see a massive increase in housing numbers over the plan period 2031 – 2050 (16,000 of which 6,000 would be to meet the needs of Leicester City). The plan has been approved by all the councils in Leicestershire but Harborough has agreed to take one the highest housing figures in the County.

Key to accommodating this scale of growth would be the construction of a new trunk road around the south and east of Leicester known as the A46 Expressway. It would cut a vast swathe through an area somewhere between Thurnby / Scraptoft and Billesdon – strategic development sites would be served off the new road. The plan is dependent on the Government giving the go-head to the Expressway. Local Liberal Democrat councillors are becoming more and more concerned about this massive voluntary housing plan which is being pushed through by Conservative bosses at both the District and the County Councils.

This scheme is at an early stage but local Liberal Democrats want to make it absolutely clear that we are opposed to it. We don’t want to contribute to the number of people dying or made ill by air pollution from road traffic. We want to keep our environment safe and clean.
